In an unprecedented move, Finnish multinational communications corporation Nokia has decided for outsourcing of its Windows phone manufacturing. Trade reports indicate that Nokia has signed a deal with Compal Communications for the same purpose.
This outsourcing deal allows Compal to design and manufacture phones with the Windows phone software and the Nokia logo. This deal also signals a remarkable change in Nokia's outlook as far as outsourcing is considered. Before this Nokia used to finish all its work internally and it was helpful considering the quality and uniqueness of their products.
However, the decision is not a bad one, since Nokia has to face the challenge posed by the Android and iphone to its number 1 status. The status of Nokia as a hardware as well as a software company took a huge beating after the introduction of Android particularly. Its hugely popular Symbian platform which not only formed the core part of its own cell phones but also that of other companies may seem redundant now since other companies are diversifying into other platforms. At such a stage outsourcing seems like a viable option in order to maintain balance.
Outsourcing may help Nokia get a new lease as a competitor in the smart phone category which is now flooded with the Android platform.

There is a debate in the US around outsource IT and contact centers, because critics claim that this practice is eliminating a much needed base of US jobs. In spite of the public criticism, companies are moving more in this direction anyway as a way of reducing their costs and streamlining their customer service.

Most were hoping that public acceptance would follow eventually, but this has not happened a a new trend is emerging instead. It seems that some US-based companies are closing their offshore sites due to low customer acceptance. The issue has as much to do with the companies' approach to managing the centers as it does to the fact that they established them to begin with. A lack of proper oversight has created a bad reputation for contact center outsourcing, regardless of the location.
